MACEDON. Koinon of Macedon. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Triassarion (Bronze, 26 mm, 12.47 g, 6 h), Beroea, time of Severus Alexander, 222-235. ΑΛЄΞΑΝΔΡ૪ Head of Alexander III 'the Great' to right, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with a griffin on the bowl. Rev. ΚΟΙΝΟΝ ΜΑΚЄΔΟΝΩ ΝЄΩ Alexander, wearing lion skin headdress, riding Boukephalos to right, thrusting spear; below, star. AMNG III 444a. RPC VI online 380.7 (this coin). A lovely and attractive example with unusually clear details. Slightly rough, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. D. Cornel and previously from a Swiss collection, formed before 2005, Leu Web Auction 15, 27-28 February 2021, 1099.

An interesting minor detail about this coin is the lion skin headdress that Alexander is wearing on the reverse. This attribute linked the great king with Herakles and was clearly derived from Alexander's well-known Attic silver tetradrachms.
